The Effect of Depression and Suicidal Ideation of Elderly on Quality of Life :Focusing on Mediating Effect of Social Capital

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of elderly depression and suicide ideation on the quality of life by mediating the components of social capital. For this purpose, previously collected data from 509 questionnaires conducted in order to implement a depression and suicide prevention program for the elderly using home support service center in a big city were used. For the analysis, the structural equation model was used to verify the effect of mediation. The results showed that suicide ideation through the trust of social capital, and depression through the network indirectly influenced the quality of life, norms directly influence the quality of life of the elderly. Discussion on practice implication include the development of community - based elderly depression and suicide prevention program, the extension of participation of elderly's community organization, and the reinforcement of capabilities related to elderly's social norms.
